About Emily Serrato '27

Emily Serrato, a 2025-26 Hackworth Fellow at the Markkula Center for Applied Ethics.

Emily Serrato is majoring in Neuroscience with a minor in Religious Studies. As a first-generation college student and daughter of Mexican immigrants, she drew from personal experience to explore how language barriers in healthcare can compromise core ethical principles such as autonomy, justice, and beneficence. Through the Hackworth Fellowship, Serrato examined the ethical dimensions of language accessibility in medicine. She wants to elevate underrepresented voices, contribute meaningfully to the Markkula Center’s mission, and grow as both an ethical leader and student.
