Students Connect Their Courses and Skills to Active Research Projects

As you can see from this year's faculty updates, we have been able to leverage our Witold Krassowski Student Research Assistant Endowed Award for many of our students to work directly with faculty as paid research assistants. We will continue to highlight these amazing collaborations and projects throughout our various updates.

One example is the work of Jazmin Rivera ’26 and Miguel Colin-Ayala ’26, who both happened to take Qualitative Methods at the same time with Dr. King. Along with (now) rising senior Ella White, they chose to focus on transfer students at SA国际传媒 as their group research project. Then, when Jazmin took the sociology research capstone with Dr. Lopez-Aguado, she chose as her project, “Stigma Surrounding Community College Students”. Similarly, when Miguel took the applied capstone with Dr. Hunter, he completed his project, “Evaluating Structural Support and the Student Experience: Insights into SA国际传媒’s Transfer Community”. Then they both worked as paid research assistants with Dr. Nichols, where they have been coding interviews with transfer students conducted by two previous research assistants and plan to submit the paper to an academic journal. Miguel and Jazmin also served as mentors to new sociology transfer students and represented the department in outreach to prospective transfer students to SA国际传媒. You can read more about Jazmin鈥檚 experience.
